AIR BRUSH TANNING
Let's talk about a tan that's both natural
looking and UV free. Airbrush tanning is
a new and safe way of achieving a golden
look without the risks of skin cancer often
associated with overexposure from the sun,
or from a tanning bed.
Using an airbrush gun, a liquid containing
dihydroxyacetone [DHA], the active ingredient
in the tanning solution, is applied to the
body. DHA is a derivative of the sugar beet
and is completely natural. This ingredient,
which has been approved by the FDA for over
30 years for cosmetic applications, reacts
with the amino acids and proteins in the
outer layers of the skin. By interacting
with the surface cells, DHA darkens the skin
color to produce a natural tan exactly like
the sun does but without damaging your skin.
DHA will not activate in an environment of
less than 70 degrees - the body being a temperature
of 97.5 degrees is what causes this ingredient
to activate. The mixing of sugar, natural
acids from the body and the temperature is
what causes the tanning transformation to
take place. Much like leaving a sliced apple
exposed in the air for a short period of
time, the apple will turn brown and a similar
process is basically happening with your
skin.
Most tanning solutions contain some sort
of bronzer so you can see where it has been
applied, which also provides gratification
to the client by giving them an instant golden
glow. The tanning process, caused by the
DHA reaction with the skin, takes approximately
8 to 10 hours. As the dead skin cells are
shed or exfoliated, the color of your tan
gradually fades, just like a regular sun
tan. Any rubbing of the skin by clothing
or aggressive washing will shorten the life
of your tan. Spray tans last approximately
5 to 7 days depending on your life style
and skin type. Dryer skin types exfoliate
faster, so hydrating with lotion daily will
keep your tan looking healthy. With follow-up
visits, you can maintain your tan indefinitely.

Preparing for your tanning session… |
- Before coming in for your session, be sure
to exfoliate your skin and remove all dried
and dead skin from the body.
- Shave all parts that are normally shaved
at least 6 hours prior to your scheduled
session.
- Do not wear any lotions, make-up, deodorant
or perfume to your session as some products
act as a barrier and will prevent the solution
from being absorbed into the skin.
- During your session, you may choose to wear
clothing or be tanned completely nude - either
process is acceptable as nudity does not
offend most airbrush technicians - do what
is most comfortable for you. Should you choose
to wear clothing, please be sure to avoid
wearing items made of silk or satin, light
nylon or wools as the tanning solution tends
to stain these fabrics.
- Loose, dark clothing is recommended for your
comfort after your session. Bring sandals
or flip-flops for your feet. Tight fitting
items will prevent the solution from setting
in.

| Post tanning instructions… |
- After your tanning session, you may feel
sticky for up to an hour as the main ingredient,
DHA, is a derivative of the sugar beet.
- Do not have any activities planned after
your tanning session that would cause you
to perspire or get wet in anyway. This will
cause the solution to run and look uneven
when the activation is taking place.
- Do not sit directly on leather or light fabric
after your session as the bronzer may rub
off and discolor the fabric.
- You should shower sometime between 12 and
24 hours after your session to ensure the
best looking tan. Showering earlier may cause
the tan to under develop and leaving it on
longer may cause blotching. The actual tanning
process takes between 2 and 4 hours to start
activating and will continue for up to 24
hours. Even after you have showered, the
body is still saturated with DHA and will
continue to tan for a short while. NOTE:
Since your application contained bronzer,
you will see color washing off the first
time you shower. Do not be alarmed as this
is just surface color that was applied during
your session and will not affect your tan.
- When showering, use a mild soap and the palms
of your hands only. Do not use a scrub brush,
loofa, etc., as these will cause premature
exfoliation of the skin that has just been
tanned and you may look uneven. Use these
items and an exfoliant only prior to you
next tanning session to assure that all dry,
dead skin cells have been removed again.
- Pat dry out of the shower and apply moisturizer
while there is still some dampness to your
skin.
- Do not use lotions with AlphaHydroxy Acids;
their purpose is to increase exfoliation.
- Use a fresh razor for shaving - a dull razor
requires more pressure and will remove excessive
skins cells.
